Landscape and the unsustainable urban realm

Augustin Berque

Abstract.  This article establishes the genealogy of the myth which, in the West as well as in the East, has induced the idealization of the detached house close to “nature” in terms of landscape, and thus produced in the end a pervasive form of settlement – a rural-like form of urbanization covering the whole territory – which, being both ecologically unsustainable and morally unjustifiable, is called for this double reason “the unsustainable urban realm”.
